Steep 1st XI v East Woodhay Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 04 Jun 2016 at 14:00
East Woodhay Cricket Club Won by 9 wickets
Match report
East Woodhay 1st XI travelled to the very picturesque Steep, looking to overturn last year’s defeat at EWCC’s Malverley’s Ground. On a very humid day, skipper Joe Lawrance called the toss correct and elected to field first.
Gavin Ansell (3-20), pick of the bowlers once again, used his experience to outfox the Steep top order with away swing and movement off the seam. With his opening partner, Richard Dando bowling tightly also, the home team were reduced to 21-3 after 8 overs and Steep needed to recover from a disastrous start to their innings. The run rate hovered around 3 RPO until the 30th over when century maker from the previous season Graham Hughes (84) began to up the rate. He took advantage of the short leg side boundary targeting Woodhay’s change bowlers, hoisting the ball over the rope on numerous occasions. With help from skipper John Smith (33*), Steep set a target of 210 for the loss of 7 wickets, an admirable and spirited recovery!
As it transpired, even a target of 300 may not have been sufficient, as East Woodhay’s batsman carried on their superb form that had seen only 6 wickets fall in the first 3 games of their 2016 Hampshire Cricket League campaign. Joe Lawrence and Tom Flack, once again laid the foundations for the chase with a 5 RPO 100 run opening partnership. Lawrance was unlucky to pick out square leg with a powerful pull shot for a well-made 46. This brought Richard Dando to the crease and after a watchful start, Woodhay’s number 3 amassed an unbeaten 75 to almost outscore his opening teammate, with 54 of his runs coming via boundaries. However Flack continued his imperious form, hitting the winning run and carrying his bat for 76 as the away side reached the target within 36 overs.
Worth noting that, after 4 innings and only having been dismissed once, Tom Flack now averages 341.00 in league cricket this year… While it may be unthinkable that Tom could continue his fine run and average all year, the whole club waits to see what heights he can reach in the coming weeks!
