East Woodhay Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Hayling Island 1st XI on Sat 25 Jun 2022 at 13:00
East Woodhay Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets

Match report East Woodhay’s 1st XI returned home with a determination to reduce the number of extras bowled last week at South Wilts, winning the toss Skipper Joe Lawrance was quick to insert Hayling Island on a green but hard track, opening bowlers Richard Dando and George Walters started impressively starting with a strong line and length which restricted the Hayling Island openers before Holt fell to a fine edge to keeper Adam Barnes off Dando, who then took his second wicket in the 9th over with the socre on 15. A smart run out by Walters despatched Johnson and Hayling limped to 30 -3 off 14 overs.

The paucity of width was continued by the evergreen Alan Williams, who gave little away without any success, finishing with 0-28 from his 9 overs, Dando’s fine spell finished with 2-10 from his allotted overs. Seb Chapman and Sanjeet Garood bowled well to the set pair of Greg Chaplin and Gary Martin, who combined power and touch to put on 119 for the 4th wicket as Hayling reached 143-4 in the 36th over.

Martin was caught by Lawrance of Chapman for 52 and then the impressive Chaplin was caught off the returning Walters by James Hall for a well made 68, the score having reached 146-5, this sparked a collapse as 3 wickets fell for 7 runs, only some late defiance by Zach Gillam who finished unbeaten on 15 took the score to a well below par of 167-8. After 39 wides last week only 4 bowled this week, a significant improvement and one that needs to be maintained.

The wicket taking bowlers being Walters 9-3-13-3, Dando 9-5-10-2 and Chapman 9-0-53-2

The run chase started badly as Barnes played around a straight on for Wayman and was bowled for 5, Sanjeet Garrod joined Lawrance and they quickly got into their stride, pushing the score to 111 in the 17th over when Garood was caught in the deep for a very well-made 50, Tom Leeson feel LBW for 3 with the score at 118 but at this point Dando joined Lawrance but any hope Hayling had was soon extinguished as they combined to take Woodhay to victory in the 26th over with Lawrance finishing unbeaten on 76 and Dando 26 not out.

A comprehensive victory ahead of next week’s trip to Shrewton and their “retired” superstar Rikki Clarke.
