East Woodhay Cricket Club Lost 83 runs
Match report
A lacklustre display versus promotion rivals Ferndown has left East Woodhay with a mountain to climb if they are to go up this season after an 83 run defeat at Malverley’s on Saturday.
Ferndown having been put into bat made their intentions clear as opener Chris Armstrong tucked into the opening over from the unfortunate George Walters. A fit again Cam Flack shared the new ball and he nailed the dangerous Eric Linge for a first ball duck but that was as good as it got for the home side. Armstrong was flaying the ball to all parts as he and James Raftery added 42 in which the latter scored just the 1 run before he smashed a Henry Chapman full toss straight to Luke Howe at short midwicket. Flack then cleaned up Alex Sansum for 0 and it was Chapman again who struck, this time Armstrong had to for 44 off just 32 balls including seven 4’s and a 6, Luke Howe again the fielder with the safe hands. Duncan Johnson then pulled off a sensational catch at slip to remove Will Sansum for 8, Chapman the successful bowler and when Alan Williams dismissed George Stephenson for 0 courtesy of another excellent catch at point from George Walters, Ferndown were staring down the barrel at 74-6. A pivotal moment in the game followed as youngster Cam Golding edged Williams's next ball but unfortunately for Woodhay the chance wasn’t taken and Golding, together with fellow youth Freddie Pittaway, set about rebuilding his sides innings. The two batted brilliantly in a way not befitting their tender years and they added 89 valuable runs before Pittaway fell to Duncan Johnson for a fine 39. Golding reached a fantastic 50 soon after and although Darryl Baines (4) and Will Avery (5) came and went quickly, last man Miles Lewis made a quick 12 before he was the last man out, leaving Golding unbeaten on 59* and Ferndown all out for 205 in 39.2 overs.
All the Woodhay bowlers performed well with Henry Chapman 3-24 from his 8 overs the pick, ably supported by George Walters 2-53 from 7.2 overs, Duncan Johnson 2-24 from 8 overs, Alan Williams 1-33 from 6 overs, Cam Flack 2-29 from 4 overs all chipping in.
Chasing just over 200 at Woodhay would usually never be a problem but for some reason the home sides reply never got going and with wickets falling at regular intervals to a combination of tight bowling and poor shots, Woodhay were dismissed in just 31.2 overs for 122 in an absolute horror show with the bat. Only Rich Dando (24) and Duncan Johnson (21) made over 20 as Ferndown spinner Will Sansum was gifted a five wicket haul.
Woodhay travel to 2nd placed Odiham & Greywell next and only a win will keep the season alive.
