Bishops Waltham CC 1st XI v East Woodhay Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 31 Jul 2021 at 13:00
East Woodhay Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets

Match report East Woodhay finally broke their away day blues with a fairly comfortable 6 wicket win at Bishops Waltham on Saturday to keep themselves in the promotion shake up in Hampshire County Division 2 with just the four games left to play.

Woodhay skipper Joe Lawrance won the toss and inserted the home side and was rewarded with an immediate success as George Walters produced a snorter of a delivery which opener James Holder shouldered arms to only to find his off stump disturbed and he had to go. Alex Watson and Luke Carvey steadied the ship until the introduction of Duncan Johnson saw Watson (22) edge a rising delivery and Adam Barnes took an excellent catch behind the stumps. Rob Prince then produced a super piece of work to run out the stoic Carvey for a patient 34 and from then on wickets fell regularly around Cleary who made a bright half century as the home side could only set a target of 157-7 from their allotted 40 overs.

All the Woodhay bowlers did an excellent job, George Walters 2-35 from 8 overs, Duncan Johnson 2-27 from 8, Alan Williams 1-23 from 8, Rich Dando 1-33 from 8 and Henry Chapman 0-34 from his 8 in a really disciplined performance with the ball.

Woodhay openers Lawrance and Barnes made a steady, if unspectacular, start reaching 34 without loss before Lawrance was caught for 12. A solid partnership of 45 between Barnes and Tom Leeson got the visitors up to 79 before Barnes holed out for 31. Another 40+ stand between Leeson and Rich Dando got Woodhay close until Dando was run out for 24 and when Duncan Johnson was given out lbw for 8 the nerves might have started jangling but Leeson was superb, reaching an excellent 50 and together with George Walters, the pair saw their side over the line in the 38th over, Leeson unbeaten on 53* and Walters 9* as Woodhay finished on 159-4 to gain a useful 22 points and go above their opponents on the day.

The next two games will define Woodhay’s season as they welcome 4th place Ferndown Wayfarers to Malverley’s this coming weekend before visiting 2nd place Odiham & Greywell the following Saturday
