East Woodhay Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v IBM Hursley CC on Sat 03 Jul 2021 at 13:00
East Woodhay Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets
Match report
East Woodhay moved ominously into the top five of Hampshire County Division 2 with yet another home win, as they defeated IBM Hursley by 6 wickets on Saturday.
Hursley skipper Rob Pfeiffer won the toss and elected to bat and it was Pfeiffer himself who soon departed, falling for 8 courtesy of a well set trap by Woodhay skipper Joe Lawrance who took the catch himself off the bowling of Richard Dando. Matt Robbins and Naseem Alam combined well to put on 49 but the introduction of Duncan Johnson saw the demise of Robbins for 40, George Walters taking a brilliant catch running in from the boundary. Alan Williams was introduced into the attack and once again, together with Johnson, the two old heads destroyed the visitors middle order, Williams clean bowling Alam for 22, Tony Rolfe for 7 and Isaac Cowdrill for 15 in an inspired 8 over spell which yielded 3-36 for the Woodhay medium pacer.
Johnson pitched in with the wicket of Michael Pollard for a four ball duck and at 113-6 the home side were hoping to wrap things up pretty quickly. It was a combination of an excellent partnership of 108 between Dan Hood and Sri Raman and some unusually ragged fielding from Woodhay that saw the game threaten to go away from them as both batsmen survived several dropped catches and misfields aplenty as they made the most of Woodhay’s generosity. The partnership was eventually broken when Raman was run out by George Walters for a fine 56 and with Elliot Teague returning to take the wicket of Naqvi Shameel first ball, it was left to Hood and Charlie Griffiths to see out the 40 overs to finish on 229-9, Hood unbeaten on 65, a superb innings given the difficult circumstances in which he came to the crease.
Needing 230 to win on a beautiful Woodhay batting track isn’t usually a problem and so it proved as Joe Lawrance and Adam Barnes posted yet another 50 opening stand before Lawrance was caught by Pfeiffer off the bowling of Tommy Wetherell for 21. Barnes was his usual positive self, using his feet and hitting boundaries at will, passing yet another 50 and the partnership with Richard Dando had reached 73 when Barnes was surprisingly trapped lbw for 52 off the bowling of Shameel. Duncan Johnson joined Dando and the pair added 69 together to get their side almost home, Dando looking much more like his old self with the bat before he chipped one to mid-wicket for a fine 76. Alarm bells starting ringing soon after when Johnson fell for 33, the home side still needing a further 32 to win. George Walters strode in and after a quiet start he smashed three massive sixes and two fours to finish the game swiftly as Woodhay passed their target for the loss of just 4 wickets in the 37th over, Walters unbeaten on 27* at the close.
It was a good chase by the home side and that’s four wins from four at home and now Woodhay need to start performing away from home if they are going to continue to climb the table in search of those promotion places.
A visit to Bashley Rydal is up next, although with Richard Dando and Rob Prince missing for the trip to the New Forest, Woodhay will need to utilise their squad in the search for that elusive away win.
