Match report EWCC 1st XI v Wherwell CC

After victories against Newbury and Thatcham, Woodhay welcomed Wherwell, who play in the same division in the Hampshire League to the parish. The Wherwell skipper promptly won the toss, saw the sunshine and the usual Woodhay wicket and elected to field. A decision he may have regretted through the course of the afternoon.

Woodhay Adam Barnes and debutant, Ben Hummel took the score to 47 when Barnes was judged LBW for 13, this brought Sanjeet Garood to the crease and the two youngsters then proceeded to play their shots in a controlled and consistent manner to take the score to 193 when Garrod was caught for a well made 61.
A few Woodhay batsmen tried their luck and failed, but Hummel continued to plunder the bowling and was finally bowled for a very well made and impressive 164 in the 42nd over. Woodhay stalwarts Joe Lawrance 27* and Alan Williams 11* finished off the innings with Woodhay reaching 321-6 from 45 overs.

Wherwell were always going to struggle to reach such a large target, but losing both openers with only 4 on the board was definitely not the start they were looking for and despite some brief resistance from Dawes (46) and Fords (19) wickets fell regularly and cheaply with the Woodhay bowlers sharing the wickets between them; Williams 3-14, George Walters 2-8 and Elliot Teague 2-30 leading the team home as Wherwell subsided to 109 all out in 24.1 overs.

A comprehensive win and a successful pre-season with a number of young players settling well into the squad before the league matches start with a home game on 7 May against Steep.
