East Woodhay Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Fair Oak 2nd XI on Sat 11 Jun 2022 at 13:00
East Woodhay Cricket Club Lost by 77 runs

Match report The Woodhay pitch is renowned throughout the region as a batter’s paradise and so it proved last weekend as the visitors Fair Oak travelled up from Southampton, winning the toss Fair Oak Skipper James Todd chose to try out the wicket first and with his partner Hockenhull they progressed sedately to 40 before George Walters encouraged Hockenhull to edge behind for 25, Todd then feathered an edge off Alan Williams to Woodhay keeper, Adam Barnes, for 28 with the score on 58-2, some spectacular fielding from Walters saw Kemp run out 58-3 in the 16th over and no indication of the fireworks to come.

The three fallen wickets brought together youngsters Matt White and Tom Clark, who settled into their task rather sedately as they pushed the score forwards, at 30 overs gone they were still together with the score on 135, the next 15 overs brought carnage as both Clark and White played their shots and punished any ball that missed line or length by millimetres, Clark fell for an impressive 124 in the 40th over having complied a partnership of 199 with White, Greig Stewart lasted two balls but hit one of them for 6, White was bowled on 99 by Luke Howe and James Gradwell bludgeoned his was to an unbeaten 50 off 18 balls as Fair Oak finished on 347-6 off 45 overs, having scored 212 runs off the last 15 overs and 81 off the last 5!

The bowling figures for Woodhay made poor reading with Richard Dando 2-78 being the most successful, the other wicket takers being Walters 1-57, Williams 1-63 and Howe 1-5 from his solitary over.

An impressive total and one built on a platform of sensible and powerful batting and aided by some poor catching form the Woodhay fielders but whilst above par not necessarily beyond reach of a talented Woodhay batting line up, openers Joe Lawrance and Adam Barnes made a decent start until Lawrance missed a straight one for 33, Hampshire U15 Sanjeet Garood joined Barnes and they pushed the score to 124 in the 18th over staying up with the rate when Barnes was caught behind for 30. Garood departed for an impressive 64 and, Walters was caught in the deep for 4 and then Dando was amazingly caught by Hockenhull for 10 with the score on 149-5.

Tom Leeson (13) and Seb Chapman took Woodhay to 192-6 off 31 overs, still ahead of Fair Oaks comparative score but when Chapman fell for a well worked 58 with the total at 233 the writing was on the wall, Howe (14), James Hall (4) came and went and left Williams and Henry Chapman to play out, Chapman hit a couple of bold maximums to take the Woodhay total of 270 when he was caught in the deep leaving Williams not out on 13. A total that would have been successful in every other game this season left Woodhay 77 runs short.

A total of 617 runs scored in 88.1 overs in the sunshine of North Hampshire!
