East Woodhay Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets

Match report 1st XI v Rowledge – youth shows the way . . ..

Woodhay 1st XI needed to bounce back following last week’s dismal batting a performance against Redlynch & Hale and did so in some style against Rowledge, a team with ambitions of their own in regard to promotion this season.

Rowledge’s skipper won the toss and elected to bat on the usual Woodhay Road, it looked a good decision as openers Yates and Witney set about building a decent opening stand against the Woodhay bowlers, they combined well to push the score up to 108 when Witney was spectacularly caught on the boundary, one handed by George Walters, for 57, Martin joined Yates and together then continued to push the total upwards, when Yates was out to a great catch by Sanjeet Garood for 67 and the score at 156-2 in the 29th over, Rowledge should have been looking towards a score in the region of 300, however a combination of teenage spinners, Barnaby Talbot-Williams and Sebastian Chapman slowed both the scoring rate and took regular wickets as Rowledge struggled to finish on 236-8 off their 45 overs, 14 year old Chapman recording his first league 5fer as he finished with figures of 5 for 34 off his 9 overs.

Woodhay’s catching and ground fielding was exemplary as Rowledge probably finished 20 or 30 runs short of a par score, that said so did Redlynch last week!

After last week’s 8-4 there was a little nervousness about the Woodhay batting, especially when the usually explosive Ben Hummel was caught behind off the bowling of Bonser for 5, but that brought youngster Garood to the crease to join Adam Barnes, and the pair settled in well, ruthlessly punishing anything loose in terms of line or length in a batting masterclass, Garrod reached his maiden Woodhay century, hopefully the first of many, in the 25th over before being caught for 103, Barnes was joined by Woodhay Skipper, Joe Lawrance and pushed on towards his own milestone, sadly a second century was missed by two runs as he was caught for a very well made 98. Lawrance finished the match off on an unbeaten 21 as Woodhay overhauled their target in only 31 overs, finishing 238-3 and winning by 7 wickets.

A day of milestones as two 14 year olds made it onto the club’s honours board for the first time!
