East Woodhay Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Shanklin & Godshill CC on Sat 12 Jun 2021 at 13:00
East Woodhay Cricket Club Won by 121 runs
Match report
East Woodhay resumed winning ways after last weeks disappointing visit to Ryde in spectacular fashion as they beat Shanklin & Godshill by 121 runs at Malverley’s on Saturday.
Shanklin skipper Ben White won the toss and decided to bowl first and his opposite number Joe Lawrance flew out of the blocks for Woodhay and together with Adam Barnes punished anything off line or length on a typically ‘bat friendly’ Woodhay surface. Barnes offered a sharp chance to gully early doors, but that was as good as it got for the visitors as both openers passed their half centuries at a decent lick until Barnes fell in the most unluckiest way, Lawrance drove straight and the bowler just got a fingertip onto the ball which deflected onto the stumps to leaves Barnes stranded for a fine 65. Woodhay 147-1 and that was soon 148-2 as the old ‘one brings two’ saying rang true and it was Lawrance this time falling lbw to Andrew White for a brilliant 77.
Richard Dando then took control in customary fashion but had to watch as the Woodhay middle order offered very little, Oliver Batchelor bowled by Callum Wright for 13, Duncan Johnson fell to Andrew White for 8, George Walters also to Andrew White for 4 and then Luke Howe holed out for 0 off Ben White and suddenly from a position of absolute control, Woodhay were battling. Dando though was imperious and the lower order really did their bit in the search for quick runs, Alan Williams clearing the ropes for two maximums and although Dando fell late on for an excellent 61, Henry Chapman came in and smashed the last over for 20 runs to propel his side up to an imposing 279-8 off the 40 overs, Chapman remaining unbeaten on 22*.
Shanklin openers Mark Ringer and Callum Wright needed a good start but Elliot Teague and Dando soon got into their work, Teague nailing Wright for 6. Dando then removed Ringer (11) courtesy of a brilliant catch in the covers from Luke Howe and Seb Egerton-Read caught and bowled for 3. Adam Barnes showed his talents behind the stumps firstly a brilliant leg side stumping to dismiss Harry Moore for 12 and then a smart catch down the leg side, standing up, to see the back of Ben White for 15, Alan Williams the grateful bowler on both occasions and the Shanklin reply was in tatters at 63-5.
It was then that 13 year old Sam Mills took centre stage, playing some delightful cuts and sweeps, his quick hands being particularly impressive. He watched on helplessly as Shaun Philips gave Williams his third wicket of the afternoon whilst Andrew White fell caught and bowled to Duncan Johnson for 6. Teague returned to trap Matt Lambourne lbw for 1 and young Mills brave resistance finally came to an end when Teague bowled him for a brilliant 62. The game was finished by Luke Howe who had Trotter well caught by Cameron Flack for 6 and the visitors were all out for 158 from 37.2 overs to give Woodhay a maximum 24 point haul.
Alan Williams picked up 3-17 from 6 overs, Elliot Teague 3-30 from his 8 and Richard Dando completed a fine all round performance to return 2-21 from his 6 overs.
Woodhay travel to Redlynch & Hale next looking for another solid performance although they will have to do it without Dando who is unavailable.
