East Woodhay Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v OTs & Romsey 2nd XI on Sat 29 May 2021 at 13:00
East Woodhay Cricket Club Won by 85 runs

Match report After being frustrated by the early season rain East Woodhay finally got their Hampshire Division County 2 off and running with a comfortable 85 run victory over a visiting OT’s & Romsey second string at Malverley’s on Saturday.

Skipper Joe Lawrance lost the toss and Woodhay were invited to bat and made a steady, if unspectacular, start as Lawrance and Rob Prince carefully negotiated some useful movement from the opening attack. Having done the hard yards, Prince was undone by a change, as the spin of Liam Longland sneaked one through via the inside edge and Prince departed for a battling 19. This brought the in-form Adam Barnes in to join his skipper and the pair set about the bowling with relish as Lawrance passed his half century before he too fell to Longland, smartly stumped by keeper Poolman for 57. There was to be no let up for the visitors however as whilst Richard Dando was getting himself set, Barnes was flaying the ball to all parts as the bowling became untidy, with the extras piling up. Barnes passed 50 and with Dando now set the boundaries were pierced with alarming regularity in a stand of 158 which was ending when Barnes was lbw to Hurle for a magnificent 84 off 79 balls to leave his side in an excellent position at 275-3. Dando continued to plunder the visiting attack, passing his 50 and although Woodhay lost George Walters cheaply they were able to post an intimidating 290-4 off their allotted 40 overs, Dando unbeaten on 65 at the close.

OT’s & Romsey’s cause wasn’t helped by the 39 wides and 2 no balls that were bowled but Liam Longland was excellent, bowling 8 overs of off spin recording 2-22 and was easily the pick of the attack.

With 290 to chase, openers Liam Poolman and Paul Longland’s intentions were pretty obvious as anything loose from the opening attack of George Walters and Richard Dando was lashed to the fence. It was a brave strategy but one that was never going to last as Longland edged Dando behind for 19. Skipper Newman joined Poolman and the pair continued the attack adding a quick fire 56 before a double strike saw firstly Newman hole out to Dando off Alan Williams for 24 and then Poolman hit a low full toss from Cameron Flack to Lawrance and had to go for an excellent 40. Alex Bampton was then bowled by Williams for 2 and all of a sudden the visitors had a real mountain to climb at 101-4. Former Great Bedwyn player Richard Bosson was now left with the mid-lower order to try and steer his side closer and although he looked untroubled, wickets starting to tumble around him as the twin spin of Henry Chapman and the experienced Duncan Johnson took over. Chapman bowled Liam Longland (7) with a peach and then had Hurle smartly stumped by Barnes for 8, whilst Johnson mopped up the tail, including Bosson who made a fine 62, to finish with flattering figures of 4-26 from his 5.5 overs. OT’s & Romsey were all out for 205 in the 37th over to leave Woodhay claiming a maximum 24 point haul to go joint top of the table at this fledging stage of the season.

Next up for Woodhay is a trip to the Isle of Wight and a visit to Ryde as they look to continue the early season momentum.
