East Woodhay Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Hartley Wintney 3rd XI on Sat 22 Jun 2019 at 13:00
East Woodhay Cricket Club Won by 9 wickets

Match report Finally after what seemed an eternity cricket returned to Woodhay as the 2nds took on Hartley Wintney III in bright sunshine, the game has a history of opening bowlers working in tandem; think Hall and Griffiths, Anderson and Broad and now we have Rutt and Clements.

The experienced Simon Rutt and his majestic in-swing was partnered with 16 year old Sam Clements for the first 10 overs and they certainly did a job on the Wintney batsmen.

Whilst Clements was bowling maiden after maiden, not conceding a run until the 20th ball he bowled Rutt was bamboozling batsmen, clean bowling three of the top four to make the score 17-3 after 10 overs. The scoring continued at a pedestrian rate until drinks with Hartley reaching 50-3 after 20 overs, a quick burst of apple and blackberry squash energised the batsmen who attempted to push on, however this allowed 15 year old Henry Chapman to claim the scalp of Kirkpatrick for 18 thanks to a sharp catch by Ben Lawrance, with the score at 62-4 in the 23rd, Ankur joined T Jackson at the crease and they edged the score forward until Ankur was caught by H Chapman off the bowling of Swingler for 19, the score 121-5 in the 36th over.

With 4 overs left Hartley attempted to push on but this led some comedic running between the wickets as 3 batsmen found themselves stranded and the innings closed on 143-8 with 18 year old Toby Jackson carrying his bat (on his birthday) for 83 - surely a double jug required?

The pick of the Woodhay bowlers being S Rutt 8-2-19-3, H Chapman 8-2-31-1 and B Swingler 7-1-37-1 and also special mention to S Clements 5-3-3-0

With a relatively low total to chase, everything depended on the start and skipper Ben Swingler and Adrian Batchelor got things off to a great start, they had pushed the score to 75 in the 13th over when Swingler played on for 35, Will "Papa" Flack joined Batchelor and they made short work of the innings taking the team through to victory in the 24th over as Batchelor 52* and Flack 43* finished off the game in style.

Next week the 2nds travel to Bentworth hoping to continue their winning run.
