East Woodhay Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Crown Taverners CC on Sat 18 May 2019 at 13:00
East Woodhay Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets
Match report
Wow, what an amazing day at Woodhay, we started with an amazing turnout for our first All Stars Cricket session of 2019 and followed it up with a topsy-turvy game v Crown Taverner's who arrived fresh from giving St Mary's a thumping the previous week.
Skipper Ben Swingler won the toss and duly elected to field, handing the new ball to Simon Rutt and Michael Rae who set about the Taverner's batsmen with a mixture of swing and pace that restricted them to 28-0 off the first 14 overs, Rutt being particularly frugal conceding just 12 off his 8 overs. Jeremy Richards and Mark Chapman took over the reins and kept up the pressure as drinks arrived in the 20th with the score at 58-0.
The drinks break seemed to rejuvenate the Taverner's batsmen as they started to push the scoring rate up, Chapman cleaned bowled Delany for 17 which brought Emmerson to the crease, who proved a much more attack minded batsman and both he and Bowles pushed the score along, Woodhay helping them along with some poor ground fielding along the way. Emmerson perished for 59 off the bowling of Adrian Batchelor, The Taverner's keeper was caught by Ollie Batchelor and Bowles went the same way for a well played 86. Walter was comically run out by A Batchelor for 19, leaving the Taverner innings closed at 218 for 5 off their 40 overs, a score they looked highly unlikely to reach at half way.
A game the looked to be in Woodhay's control at 20 overs appeared to be have taken away in the next 20.
The Woodhay response started badly as Swingler (5), Rutt (7), O Batchelor (9) were all out with the score at 53-3 in the 16th over, Richards (35), Mark Chapman (4) and Sam Clements (6) were all soon back in the hutch as Woodhay looked dead and buried with the score 79-6 in the 20 over. Needing 140 to win in 20 overs with 4 wickets standing.
When Geoff Neale departed for 7 Woodhay were 120-7 in the 25th over and Taverner's were cock-a-hoop and sensing victory. Michael Rae playing with strength and aggression and smashed his way to 58 but was out in the 31st over with the score at 152-8, still needing 69 off 9 overs with only 2 wickets standing.
This brought the combination of youth; Henry Chapman, and experience; Adrian Batchelor, together who played the next 8 overs with a mixture of sensible and aggressive batting that took the game away from Taverner's in a way that none of the spectators could dare believe, Chapman combining clever batting with power hitting to hit a career best 56* and ably supported by Batchelor 21* as Woodhay reached their victory target of 219 with 8 balls to spare, a fantastic run chase that had to be witnessed to be believed!
