Match report SWINGLER SWINGS IT WOODHAYS WAY
East Woodhay seconds got back to winning ways in a tight finish at Crown Taverners. Winning the toss on a grassy wicket with short boundaries meant bowling first was the only option. Once again Simon Rutt provided a master class of controlled inswing bowling ripping out the top order leaving Crown Taverners rocking at 33-3 off the first ten. This left the Taverners with a period of consolidation and whilst Woodhay still threatened they couldn’t make another break through and the total began to build. Eventually Chapman introduced himself into the attack and his golden arm was to the fore again making the break through with a caught and bowled in his first over. Taverners opening Short was not perturbed and he continued to play with watchfulness in defence and power in attack as he sought to build a defendable score. Ollie Batchelor bowled well taking 1-31 in 5. Sort bought up his maiden ton and some late hitting from Minhas took Taverners to 209 -6 of their 42.
Minhas was soon in the wickets as he ran through the Woodhay top order and at 25-3 off 6 the winning line looked a long way off. Chapman and Booth set about repairing the damage, taking quick singles when they were on offer and finding the boundary with anything loose. Things were definitely moving in Woodhays direction as the score approached 100 and the run rate a steady 5 per over. Then inexplicably Booth came down the track to the spinner and was stumped and the game opened up again. Neale and Rutt came and went without making much impact on the scorecard and with Chapman seeing very little of the strike the game was slipping away. In stepped Ben Swingler. After taking a few overs to size up the conditions he started to time the ball and the boundaries came. Chapman was eventually out in the 33 over for 63 with 48 still needed to win. Swingler immediately asserted his authority and found the boundary at will. Ably supported by Andy Shipp until he perished with 15 still to win Swingler eventually brought up the victory with a well struck six to win the game by 2 wickets and 4 overs to spare.
