Bentworth v East Woodhay Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 10 Jun 2017 at 2pm
East Woodhay Cricket Club Won by 18 runs

Match report ONE FOR YOU SON
East Woodhay II’s, featuring 3 father and son combinations, pulled off a fine win on a tricky pitch at Bentworth. Put into bat and despite the vagaries of the pitch, the opening combination of Adrian Batchelor and Alex Jordan (who both missed last week’s defeat against Ashford Hill), were soon back in the saddle. Mixing aggression with careful defence they rocketed along putting on 82 for the first wicket in only 14 overs before Jordan got a leading edge and was caught at mid wicket.

The dismissal of Jordan slowed the run rate and Batchelor eventually perished for a very well made 74 as he tried to up the tempo and was caught at long on. With his son Ollie then dismissed via a superb catch at short cover and Simon Rutt (18) playing around a straight one, the innings was in danger of falling short or early expectations. Roland Gardner struggled to find any rhythm but skipper Chapman was able to keep the score board moving, albeit without the tempo or the early part of the innings. With maximum batting points secure (scoring >200) Gavin Ansell added some momentum with some big hits and Chapman was then able to attack the bowling with more purpose finishing up with 46 not out off 42 balls. A final total od 216-9 was a good effort on a track suffering from mid-week downpoors, but with very short straight boundaries it was not impossible target to chase.

The opening spell was going to be key and so it turned out. Superb bowling and fielding led by the ever dependable Simon Rutt and Gavin Ansell, marshalled superbly by wicket keeper Dom Walters who ended with 3 catches, saw Bentworth reduced to 37 -3 off 13 overs with a wicket each for Rutt and Ansell and a run out by Chapman.

The match seemed to be going Wodhay’s way, as the required run rate increased to 7 an over. However that saw the introduction of the Bentworth skipper Nick Gay, batting down the order at 7, after damaging his finger whilst fielding, despite his injury he immediately found the boundary and the scoring rate increased significantly and for a few overs there was a real danger that all Woodhay’s good work was going to be undone. However, Chapman managed to get a bit more out of the pitch to surprise him with the ball looping up for a simple catch at cover and whilst the chase was still on, the match always looked to be in Woodhay’s favour. Chapman fired out the tail taking 4-56 in 10 overs and Bentworth eventually fell 18 runs short.
