East Woodhay Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Easton & Martyr Worthy 1st XI on Sat 10 Jun 2017 at 2pm
East Woodhay Cricket Club Lost by 28 runs
Match report
East Woodhay suffered a second defeat in as many weeks as they fell to an Easton & Martyr Worthy side held together by overseas Matt Chamberlain's 121 at Malverley's on Saturday.
Easton batted first and it wasn't long before Woodhay old boy Adam Kite was back in the pavilion as he fell lbw to George Walters for 6 in the 2nd over of the match. Aussie Chamberlain joined Seb Stannard and the pair added 55 before Stannard played one shot too many and was caught by Tom Flack off the bowling of Fergus Mitchell for 24. Ben Stanbrook gave Mitchell further success as he hit one out to backward square leg on the boundary and Alan Williams didn't have to move to pocket the catch, Easton 88-3 through 20 overs. It could and should have been so much better as Williams bowled a beauty to Chamberlain which he nicked through to keeper Darren Booth but the umpire and Chamberlain were both unmoved and the Aussie survived. To rub salt in the wounds he then went on the add a huge partnership of 152 with Jamie Banks as the Woodhay bowlers toiled on such an excellent pitch with a quick outfield. Chamberlain had reached 121 before the returning George Walters took his wicket. Walters then bowled Ed Ellis for a duck but that was to be the home sides last success as Banks finished unbeaten on 78* with Adam Carrick adding 6* to the final total as Easton finished their 45 overs on 257-5.
Young George Walters had most success with the ball as he finished with 3-58 from his 10 over spell with Fergus Mitchell 2-83 from his 10 overs the other wicket taker, both bowling a lot better than their figures would suggest. Alan Williams, 10 overs 0-31 and Duncan Johnson, 10 overs 0-49 tried to stem the flow of runs, both bowling tidy spells for their side.
Woodhay openers Tom Flack and skipper Joe Lawrance got the reply started in a positive fashion, both players looking in superb touch. Flack timing the ball brilliantly, driving fluently through the covers and Lawrance punishing anything short with a flurry of devastating pull shots. The century opening stand was reached in the 19th over as Woodhay cruised toward the total. Chamberlain had other ideas though and he nailed Lawrance for 62 to break the partnership at 138-1. Ben Stanbrook then had Nick Bird lbw for 0 but it was Chamberlain again who had a huge impact on the game as he dismissed Flack lbw for a fine 77. Woodhay now 145-3 approaching the 30th over. Ben Lawrance and Duncan Johnson had to get in and keep the rate ticking over and Lawrance was looking good. He hit Carrick for a big six but in trying to repeat the dose with the next ball could only find the fielder on the boundary at deep square leg and he departed for 17. The home side now had 10 overs left to get a further 80 runs but the task was to prove beyond them. Johnson was bowled by Banks for 28 to be shortly followed by Stefan Gill (9) and Alan Williams (10) also falling to Banks as the end got nearer. Young bowlers Walters and Mitchell provided some hitting entertainment, Walters ramp shot off Chamberlain being a particular highlight but it wasn't long before Easton wrapped up the innings. Walters was run out for 10, Geoff Neale was bowled by Kite for 2 and last man Darren Booth was run out for 1 leaving Mitchell unbeaten on 7* and Woodhay all out for 229 in the 45th over.
Jamie Banks 9 overs 3-54 and Chamberlain 10 overs 2-42 followed up their batting heroics with the ball whilst Adam Kite 9.5 overs 1-45, Ben Stanbrook 10 overs 1-39 and Adam Carrick
6 overs 1-47 provided good support.
Woodhay can take heart from a close loss in which they played some excellent cricket. Next week see's a trip to Ferndown and whilst Tom Flack is not available, gun all rounder Richard Dando will be back in the side as Woodhay look to arrest the recent slide.
