Redlynch & Hale 1st XI v East Woodhay Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 18 Jun 2016 at 14:00
East Woodhay Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets
Match report
DANDO THE DESTROYER SLAYS REDLYNCH & HALE!
On an overcast afternoon, following days of rain and looking down at a soft uncovered pitch in the heart of The New Forrest, East Woodhay skipper Joe Lawrance, won the toss and continued the habit of the season in deciding to bowl first.
The unusually toothless Gavin Ansell (0-32 from 5 overs), was unable to match the fine display of new ball bowling by Richard Dando, who struck with only his third ball, in a superb opening spell of 7 overs, 1 wicket for 14 runs. The Woodhay change bowlers, Alan Williams (3-32) and Craig Stephens (0-31), bowled admirably on an unhelpful pitch, too soft to provide the seam movement that the whole East Woodhay attack have used to lethal effect so far this season. The spin twins of Ben Lawrance (1-27) and Tom Flack (1-26) did well to restrict the Redlych middle order, with a few dropped catches meaning their figures weren't as flattering as they should have been.
As the innings drew to a close and with the score on 155-6 from 39 overs, it fell to Dando to wrap things up, taking the 7th Redlynch wicket with the last ball of his 9th over, the 42nd of the innings. The penultimate 44th over, Dando's 10th and last, started by bowling the Redlynch number 9. The next ball clean bowled their number 10, a well deserved hat-trick that, due to the separation of overs, was missed by everyone at the ground! Thankfully though, he took a double hat-trick (4 wickets in 4 balls) to end the Redlynch innings on 179 and give Dando figures of 5-21.
In reply, the inform Woodhay openers Joe Lawrance and Tom Flack (averaging 454.00 before this innings) strode to the crease, confident that even on a pitch as soft as this, if they showed patience, they would win the day. And so it came to be, as they defended resolutely against anything near the stumps, given the variable bounce & pace of the wicket, but pounced on anything short or wide. Joe Lawrance (30), as has often been the case this year, after a great start, let a lapse in concentration result in his demise in the 18th over, with the score on 74-1. The impressive Richard Dando came out at number 3 and after the usually early innings jitters, he joined Flack in punishing anything loose. Dando then started to move through the gears, looking to score heavily from even the good balls, with powerful straights drives, meaning the mid-on and mid-off fielders, time and again, were tasked with fetching the ball from beyond the boundary. To the amazement of all who have been following the form of Tom Flack this season, he too let his concentration slip momentarily, not getting enough elevation to a straight drive that saw him caught at mid-off for 71... Bringing his 2016 league average down to a meager 262.50 from 7 innings! WOW!
Ben Lawrance came and went for a duck at number 4, just before Dando brought up his half century, he too sadly falling just before the inevitable victory for a fine 58. Toby Albert (5*) and Will Flack (9*) enjoying a rare opportunity to don the pads this year, finished off the game well, ending on 183-4 from 38.3 overs, of the possible 45.
To recap... Tom Flack out for 71, to reduce his season average to 262.5! Ricard Dando takes 5 wickets, including a DOUBLE HAT-TRICK, and scores 58 with the bat in double quick time! Awesome cricket from these lads!!
