Match report Pre-season preparations saw a double header with Thatcham 1st XI visiting Woodhay and Woodhay’s 2nd team travelling to Brownsfield Road.

At Woodhay, Thatcham won the toss and elected to bat and despite the efforts of George Wheeler were restricted by the Woodhay attack to a below par 203-7 in 45 overs, with only Chris Rochfort’s for 23 staying at the crease to support Wheeler who batted for 27 overs for his 97, the 2nd highest scorer being extras. The pick of the Woodhay bowlers being Elliot Teague with 3 for 36 from his 8 overs and Richard Dando 2-37 from 8. Special mention to James Hall, who belied his youth and bowled consistent good lines and lengths to finish with 1 for 15 form 5 overs and Ben Lawrance, a short order replacement, who finished with 0 for 14 from 7 overs.

The Woodhay reply started well reaching 55 in the ninth over when Joe Lawrance (12) and Adam Barnes (33) respectively fell to the guile of Nick Bishop and the pace of Harvey MacKay, Tom Leeson (11) and Luke Howe (1) came and went, the wicket of Howe bringing Alan Williams to the crease and the Woodhay bowler too the game to the Thatcham bowlers, forcing the score on until dismissed for a well worked 40, Dando was bowled by Bishop for 29 and the game was in the balance with Woodhay 6 wickets down and needing 55 for victory in 16 overs.

The combination of Ben Lawrance 22* and George Walters 40* reached their target in less than 6 overs with a combination of power hitting and clever running to give Woodhay a confidence boosting victory by 4 wickets with 10 overs to spare. Their onslaught ruining some of the Thatcham bowler’s figures, the pick being Harvey MacKay with 2-37 from his 7.5 overs
