OTs & Romsey 2nd XI v East Woodhay Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 13 Aug 2022 at 13:00
East Woodhay Cricket Club Won by 192 runs
Match report
Sitting 2nd in the table Woodhay knew that every game is important if they want to play Division 1 cricket next season and with a few regulars unavailable everyone knew that a visit to bottom side Old Tauntonians & Romsey could be a potential banana skin.
The pitch was dry and looked very dusty and with the temperature in the mid 30s it was a relief as stand-in Skipper, Adam Barnes, won the toss and elected to elected to bat, OT started with pace off, a clever tactic as the ball was definitely not coming onto the bat and was generating nothing off the wicket making the initial over hard work for the Woodhay batsman, last week’s centurion Toby Talbot-Williams was adjudged to have nicked one behind for 1 and Sanjeet Garood played over a low slow one to fall for 19 with the score 45-2 in the 11th over, Richard Dando added 22 before falling caught and bowled and the score had moved onto 83-3 in the 19th over.
Dando’s dismissal brought Barnaby Talbot-williams rot the crease and he and Barnes watchfully and carefully rebuilt the innings and at drinks in the 30th over Woodhay had stabilised to 144-3, a score that both sides appeared happy with, the next 15 overs brought 149 runs and only one wicket as Barnes and Talbot-Williams upped the scoring rate and pushed Woodhay towards and, then, past their initial target of 225 in the 39th over.
Barnes who, in previous innings, has ended up stuck in the 90s like a Baywatch re-run, scored his maiden century before being bowled by a rare straight one for a well-crafted 102, having added 150 to the Woodhay total with Talbot-Williams.
Ben Lawrance joined Barnaby with 28 balls to go and the score at 233, the pair added 60 in those 4.4 overs as Lawrance finished on 14 not out and Talbot-Williams a thoroughly well-deserved and pretty much chanceless 115 not out, Woodhay finishing with 293-4 off their 45 overs. The pick of the bowlers for OT & Romsey being Steve Smith with 2-42 from his 9 overs.
For OT to challenge that total it was going to take something special, unfortunately for them the Woodhay opening pair of Dando and George Walters had other ideas as they reduced OT to 8 for 4 in the first 5 overs, with Garood snaffling a great catch off Dando to dismiss the OT skipper Bampton for 0, Walters pinning the other opener, Ponting, plumb in front for 2 and then Walters took a stunning catch to dismiss OT danger man Morris off the bowling of Dando for 4, who then made it 2 in 2 balls as he bowled Smith for 0.
There was a brief recovery before Dando bowled Dawson for 20 and Luke Howe caught Hussain for 1, OT & Romsey 34-6 in the 12th over, the game settled a little at this point as Oliver and Ball batted well together until Ball was caught in the deep by Sam Clements for 25 giving Dando figures of 5-46 from his 9 overs, Alan Williams bowled Oliver for 25 and OT were 75-8 in the 18th over. Remarkably that was only 3 behind the Woodhay score at the same point, sadly though for 6 more wickets!
The introduction of Noah Teague concluded the match as he took two smart caught and bowled chances as OT were all out for 101 in 22 overs, the Woodhay bowlers finished with figures of Dando 9-0-46-5, Teague 2-0-9-2, Williams 5-0-25-2 and Walters 4-2-7-1 as Woodhay claimed a maximum 24 points and retain 2nd place in the division
Next week a top of the table clash with chart topping Ferndown Wayfarers at home
