East Woodhay Cricket Club Won by 8 runs

Match report East Woodhay 1st XI v Bishops Waltham 1st XI

At the midway point of the season it is unlikely that either side were thinking heavily about promotion prospects but as in all sprots consistency of performance improves results and both Woodhay and Bishops Waltham have been on winning streaks and inevitably something was going to have to give at Malverleys, the game lived up to it’s potential with ebbs and flows as both teams looked to be in pole position only to be hauled back. A fantastic exhibition of cricket that was played in a great spirit. Woodhay won the toss and opted to bat in the sunshine, openers Joe Lawrance and Adam Barnes made a steady start until Barnes was beaten by a delivery from Hicks for 5, Sanjeet Garood was spectacularly caught by Waltham skipper, Sam Medhurst for 9 as Woodhay reached 50-2 in the 9th over. This brought Richard Dando to the crease who built a steady partnership with Lawrance who was dismissed LBW for a well-crafted 53 by Holder. Dando then built a 98 run partnership with Barnaby Talbot-Williams as Woodhay reached 195-4 in the 39th when Talbot- Williams was caught for 45.

Dando was bowled by Williams for 77 in the 40th over, Tom Leeson and Luke Howe pushed the score to 239 in the 45th when Howe was caught for 15, Alan Williams faced the last ball, a drop in front and some scrambled running saw two added to the total and Leeson run out for 16, Woodhay closed their innings at 242-7 off 45 overs, a decent total but with a lightning outfield possibly 20 to 30 runs short of par at Woodhay.

James Holder 9-0-38-2 and Pete Hicks 9-0-52-2 being the most successful Waltham bowlers.

The Waltham response got off tother worst possible start as Josh David bowled Barratt for 1 in the first over and had Carvey caught by Thomas Hughes for 8 Waltham were 27-2 in the 6th over. This brought Tim Agapow to the crease with Holder and the pair consolidated and then looked to score whenever possible to keep Waltham in the game as they put on 89 runs to take Waltham to 116 when Agapow was caught by Lawrance for 36. Skipper Medhurst joined Holder, who was bowled by the impressive Talbot-Williams for a well-made 70. Medhurst then chipped to the in rushing Garood when on 15 off the bowling of Talbot-Williams, Waltham 152-5 in the 34th over and the balance in Woodhay’s favour.

Kops was bowled for 13 by Sam Clements, Waltham 167-6 in the 37th and the scales tipping heavily towards Woodhay but Rhys Haynes had different ideas as he scored 33 off 23, including 2 very large maximums, before he was caught in the deep by Lawrance off Clements, Woodhay’s bowlers held their nerve as the returning Davis picked up the wicket of Upshall for 8, Williams 11 not out and Hickes 17 not out saw out the final overs to finish 8 runs short as Waltham finished 234-8 in their 45 overs

The pick of the Woodhay bowlers being the departing Josh Davis 9-1-36-3 who now returns home to Australia, Talbot-Williams 9-0-43-2 and Sam Clements 9-0-50-2 all ably assisted by a tremendous fielding performance across the entire side, which keeps Woodhay in the hunt for promotion in a very tight division and provided a victory against probably the best team we have played so far this season.
