Match report The 2ND XI arrived at Whitchurch for this pre-season friendly and credit must go to their groundsmen for producing such a well-manicured ground. The toss was on by the home team who inserted the visitors, who, as is the way at East Woodhay, had seven players under the age of 20. The opening attack of Ollie Fremantle and Sam Dancer bowled an excellent line with the new ball swinging and seaming to such an extent that the EWCC batsmen were never in danger of catching the edge and troubling the Whitchurch keeper. The EWCC openers of father and son Batchelor took the score to 36 when the son perished for 21, soon followed by the father for 31. This brought together Ben Swingler and Mark Chapman and a partnership of 65 was only broken when a sharp single saw the end of Swingler for 46. Chapman’s new lightning blue footwear may have contributed to Ben’s demise. Chapman continued to bat aggressively and after falling for 67 the Woodhay innings ended at 228-6.

The Whitchurch innings did not get off to the best start and some fine seam bowling from the ever-consistent Adrian Batchelor saw Whitchurch fall to 17-5. Batchelor having 3 for 10 off 5 overs. From this point EWCC were able to control the game but a partnership of 119 between Tom Desmond (34) and Sam Dancer (91) took Whitchurch to 136. When this partnership was finally broken by Ollie Batchelor it was only a matter of time and with Ollie Batchelor claiming another 3 wickets, whilst being ably supported by the bowling of Blakemore (2-52) and Donald (0-20), the Whitchurch innings ended on 174.

A solid team performance from EWCC and a victory by 54 runs.
