Liphook & Ripsley 2nd XI v East Woodhay Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 06 Aug 2022 at 13:00
East Woodhay Cricket Club Won by 9 wickets

Match report The August scourge for every cricket club and poor availability hit EWCC this week. After a plea for late availabilities a number of dads rolled back the years to turn out for the EWCC 2nd XI for the away trip to the picturesque, if distant, Liphook & Ripsley CC. The EWCC skipper won the toss and returned to announce ‘we are fielding boys’. Fielding first on a warm day, on a beautiful looking track, is not something a skipper normally follows with ‘yes, I did win the toss’. Fortunately, the toss was not discussed further and EWCC took to the field.

Liphook got off to a fast start and a couple of early dropped chances had the skipper thinking that an insertion might not have been the best call. Ollie Batchelor eventually broke the opening stand having David Oliver caught for 29. Even though the EWCC bowlers bowled well, on a good batting track and a very fast outfield the margin of error for your line and length is minimal. A hundred partnership between Richard Harvey and Ross Seavill took the Liphook score to 162 with 13 overs remaining. Richard Harvey completed a swashbuckling 121 before falling in the final over and a Liphook total of 242.

Totals over 200 are always a little daunting but EWCC were confident that if they could bat the full 45 overs and put partnerships together, they would chase the total. What came next can only be described as a perfect illustration of how to chase a big score. Don’t take risks, keep the scoreboard ticking over with singles and hit the bad ball for four. When you get to the last 20 and you need one a ball, take one a ball. The opposition will normally think that they are still in control as fours are not being hit, but the reverse is true. As demonstrated by the EWCC 2 and 3 bats who showed that if you bat in a sensible, controlled manner, what seems a large total is well within reach. The game finished in a flourish of boundaries and a partnership of 224 saw EWCC home with overs to spare. The match winning partnership was performed by Toby Talbot Williams with a beautifully constructed and chanceless 135 not out and Adrian Batchelor 90 not out.
