Match report East Woodhay 2nd XI secured their fourth straight victory with an excellent fielding performance where the old adage of ‘catches win matches’ was shown to still be true. Following the rarity of winning the toss and the runs of Adrian Batchelor (96) and Mark Chapman (92) against Hook & N Basics the week before, the EWCC skipper decided to bat first. (The writer would like to clarify that the rarity was in the skipper winning the toss, not in the runs!)

The usual start from the EWCC openers was, unfortunately, greeted with a middle order collapse and EWCC went from 56-1 to 116-6 which soon became 135-7. Another old favourite for captains is ‘make sure you bat your overs’. A side hanging on using up the overs and not capitulating can work wonders in the psychology of the game. An excellent, and what proved to be a match winning partnership between the EWCC skipper and George Greenwood (37 balls faced) took the total to the brink of 200 and a final flourish saw the innings end on 203. Importantly we were not bowled out and we had used all of our 45 overs.

The Ashford Hill innings got off to a poor start with the EWCC skipper making inroads into the Ashford top order, reducing them to 23-4. Catches do win matches and excellent grabs from Braidwood, Jacobs, Chapman and Blakemore (2) saw regularly Ashford wickets and the home side were soon reduced to 74-8. Ashford Hill is not the largest of grounds and most totals are within reach for the clean striker of the ball. Ashford number 10, T. Moore, proceeded to hit out and after finding the boundary a number of times fell to an excellent catch by Sam Clements for a quick fire 43. The Ashford innings ending on 121 and an EWCC victory by 82 runs. Adrian Batchelor finished with 4-38.
