East Woodhay Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Ferndown Wayfarers 1st XI on Sat 20 Aug 2022 at 13:00
East Woodhay Cricket Club Won by 75 runs

Match report The Division Leaders, Ferndown Wayfarers travelled up from Bournemouth to the tranquillity of East Woodhay, a mouth watering clash of the top 2 sides in Division 2 of the Hampshire League who have some competitive matches in their history.

The Wayfarers arrived in a team bus courtesy of one of their club sponsors, seems to be a great team bonding exercise, any local Van Hire companies looking to support a local sports club in the Newbury area?

Winning the toss, Woodhay Skipper Joe Lawrance elected to bat in the sunshine, a decision that looked to have backfired as the Ferndown bowlers of Stammas and Raftery produced a great opening spell as Stammas to 3 wickets for 8 runs in his opening 4 overs, Woodhay 17-3 in 7 overs and rocking somewhat having lost the talent of Ben Hummel for 0, Sanjeet Garood for 3 and Lawrance for 2. The ever dependable Richard Dando joined Adam Barnes at the crease and the pair steadily rebuilt the innings.

Ferndown’s bowlers continued to bowl well, giving little width and not allowing the Woodhay batters any freedom, over the course of 30 overs Dando and Barnes pushed the score to 132 before Dando was stumped by Avery off the bowling of Golding for a well fought 63, Barnaby Talbot-Williams joined Barnes and they pushed the score to 171 when Barnes was run out for an exceptional 90.

They say cricket is a sport where momentum is key and at this point with it was with Ferndown, a par score at Woodhay is usually around 250 and Woodhay were 80 shot with only 4 overs left to bat, whilst parity was not attainable the combination of Talbot-Williams 16 not out and George Walters pushed it close as Walters scored 42 from only 18 deliveries, including 3 maximums to take Woodhay to 223-5 off their 45 overs.

The pick of the bowlers being Robbie Stammas 9-2-21-3 and Cam Golding 3-0-15-1

Both sides reached the break reasonably comfortable with their performance, Woodhay had rebuilt well from a shaky start and finished strongly whereas Ferndown would have hoped to be pursuing a little less and having taken a few more scalps but the game appeared very finely balanced at the interval.

As mentioned earlier, momentum can be built and at times is hard to change and Woodhay produced a simply exemplary performance in the field, bowling tight lines and taking every opportunity to dismiss Ferndown batters, Luke Howe spectacularly ran out Raftery for 7, Dando take an amazing catch in the slips to dismiss the high scoring Stephenson for 3, Howe caught A Sansom in the covers for 4 and Dando bowled Ferndown skipper Linge for 18 as Ferndown subsided to 51-5 in the 17th over, W Sansom (24) and Freddie Pittaway (26) moved Ferndown up to 85-7 but it was only a matter of time and when Howe took 2 wickets in 2 overs the game was over as Ferndown were dismissed for 148 in 38.5 overs, a Woodhay victory by 78 runs.

The wickets being shared across the Woodhay bowling attack as Howe 2-14, Walters 2-14, Dando 2-19, Talbot-Williams 2-22 and Sam Clements 1-14 shared the wickets.

A fantastic victory against a very good Ferndown side and one that means Woodhay leapfrogged Wayfarers to top the table with one game of the season left.

Next week a trip to the picturesque Sparsholt CC
