South Wilts 3rd XI v East Woodhay Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 18 Jun 2022 at 13:00
East Woodhay Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets
Match report
After consecutive defeats Woodhay’s first team travelled on a regular pilgrimage to Salisbury to play at the fantastic venue that is the Salisbury and South Wilts Sports Club, as usual there was cloud and rain in the air. Winning the toss Skipper Joe Lawrance elected to field obviously hoping to see the ball swinging in the overcast conditions, unfortunately the gale blowing from the west rather hampered the bowlers more than the cloud layer helped.
Opening bowlers, Richard Dando and George Walters, were miserly as they conceded 26 off the first 10 overs, Walters picking up the wicket of Harry Shardlow for 0 in the 2nd over. Wall and Crossley pushed the score to 55 when Wall fell for 30 bowled by Alan Williams, Crossley was sharply caught by Dando off Williams for 32 and Frank Whiting came, played two scoring shots and departed for 8, caught by Luke Howe to be Williams’ third victim of the match.
South Wilts skipper Tom Pearce and youngster Tristan Prinsloos played well to put on 62, aided by the gale blowing the slower bowlers deliveries down the leg side for wides, before Barnaby Talbot-Williams caught Prinsloos for 30 off the returning Walters, Pearce was run out for a well made 45 as Woodhay then managed a hat-trick of run outs in the 44th over as South Wilts lost 3 wickets for 1 run and with Walters bowling a maiden in the final over finished on 211-8 from their 45 overs
Williams 3-28, Walters 2-26 and 3 run outs completing the score card, well almost, the top scorer for South Wilts was the well known player, at all levels, Mr E.X.Tras with 50 not out as a total of 39 wides were bowled in the innings, 33 of them from the southern end of the ground . . . . .
The Woodhay start could not have been worse as a lifting delivery form the 14 year old Alex Evans took the shoulder of Lawrance’s bat for 0, Sanjeet Garood, played with his customary style before nicking on to slip for a well made 31, Adam Barnes followed caught at mid on for 30 as Woodhay slipped to 90-3, Dando then completely slipped and was stumped for 4, when Tom Leeson was bowled for 26 and the Woodhay score at 110-5 the game was in the balance. Youngsters Seb Chapman and Barnaby Talbot-Williams calmed things down and added 25 when Chapman was caught and bowled for 20.
Woodhay needed 77 to win in 12 overs with 4 wickets remaining, Walters decided attack was definitely the best form of defence and in 18 scoring shots (and 22 balls) scored 66 runs to take Woodhay to a 4 wicket victory in the 37th over, ably aided by Talbot-Williams who finished unbeaten on 17, the pick of the South Wilts bowlers being Evans 2-29 and Maduragoda 2-32
