Thatcham v East Woodhay Cricket Club Under 13's on Mon 22 May 2017 at 18:00
East Woodhay Cricket Club Lost by 7 runs

Match report It’s Monday evening it must be Thatcham, and indeed it was as the U13s ventured to Thatcham for the third time in a week to complete their Berkshire cup match. Henry Chapman, making his first appearance of the season, captained the side and in winning the toss elected to field first. Archie and Max opened the attack with Archie immediately finding an excellent delivery to remove the dangerous Thatcham opener for 5. Runs came a little too easily in the first four overs with Thatcham on 29 at this point in the game. Daniel, Miguel, Bailey, Chris and Finnley all bowled a sensible line but with singles easy to find Thatcham progressed towards 100 and the setting of a challenging target. In the last few overs the Woody bowlers were rewarded for bowling straight with Archie, Daniel and Jacob each taking a wicket. Daniel was again the most economical Woody bowler conceding only 14 runs from his 4 overs. Jack must also be congratulated on his enthusiastic fielding and for fielding at third man at both ends.

The coach is delighted to report that at the mid innings break he was invited to sample the home baked fare on offer and had a very nice sponge cake (please see previous Thatcham match report for context). Isaac once again opened the innings with Henry and were greeted with some very straight bowling making it hard to accumulate runs. After 4 overs we had 10 runs. After a couple of lusty pulls Isaac departed for 12, and with Archie being dismissed very soon after, the challenge was even greater as the run rate required was now up to around 8 an over. Miguel had now arrived to join Henry and both took on the challenge and tried to play more expansive shots. Whilst always being behind the run rate when two overs went for 17 an unexpected win looked a possibility. Sadly, it was not to be and with Henry finishing on 29 not out and Miguel for an undefeated 27 Woody finished on 104 for 2.

The Woody players again come out of the game with credit in the way they played the game. Looking closer at the scorebook, we bowled straighter than Thatcham, as we conceded fewer wides and no balls, we hit the same number of boundaries but Thatcham ran 15 more singles than us. This was the difference between the two sides and so seeing and taking the single, as well as fielding to stop this, will be areas to focus on during the next couple of Fridays.
