Match report Woodhay seconds let a victory slip through their fingers against unbeaten Ashford Hill after a cruel turn of luck saw them losing opening batter Jude Brankin Frisby with a nasty injury.
Ashford won the toss and had no hesitation in opting to bat on what is always an excellent batting surface at East Woodhay. Their confidence was misplaced though and a superb opening spell of 7-5-5-4 from Simon Rutt reduced Ashford Hill to 61-4 off 20 overs. They rebuilt through opener Mike Softley who made the most of being dropped on 4 to make a superb 97 out of a total of 161 – 9 off 42 overs. Swingler taking 2-38 and youngster Brankin Frisby 1-22 off 6 overs on his club debut. It was the dismissal of Softley in the last over of the innings that turned the game. Fielding on the deep mid wicket boundary he superbly caught Softley off the bowling of Rutt but in doing so dislocated, badly gashed hand broke his finger. Jude is a very talented opening batsman who played for Middlesex last year and was immediately taken to hospital leaving an already thin looking bating line up exposed.

Opener bowler Williamson exposed that brutally taking 2 Woodhay wickets in the first over. Skipper Chapman cam in an along with Roland Gardner briefly steadied the ship taking the score up to 32 without further alarms with Chapman in particular finding the boundary at regular intervals. However, when Chapman played at one a touch early and skied the ball to cover to depart for 18 the wheels well and truly came of the bus. Williams took another 2 wickets and Woodhay were rocking at 46 -5 in the 17th over when the heavens opened and the players came off. After being off for just over 40 minutes the target was reduced to 108 in 28 overs leaving Woodhay to score 63 runs in 12 overs. With only 4 wickets left it was too much. Field took 2-5 in 2 overs and Woodhay succumbed to 51 all out.
