Match report
WOODHAY YOUNGSTERS ON FIRE AGAIN
East Woodhay II score a comprehensive win at home against Holybourne in the Hants league Regional Div 1. With the emphasis once again on youth Woodhay opted for a young side featuring 2 U13 and 2 U14 players, as in previous games the youngsters delivered.
winning the toss and deciding to bat Woodhay soon lost opener Adrian Batchelor for 4. The fall of that wicket saw U13 Hampshire prospect Zach Holmes to the crease to accompany 14 year old Alex Jordan who already has a league century to his name this season. Batting with immense maturity and skill they added 50 in 11 overs to get Woodhay off to an excellent start, Jordan eventually being bowled for a well made 38. Skipper Chapman came and went for a quick 15 before Zach Holmes was well caught in the gully for a very solid 20 on his senior debut. With the platform laid the more experienced campaigners of Simon Rutt (47) and Roland Gardner (59*) added 87 for the 4th wicket before a late flurry from Ben Swingler (15*) helped Woodhay to post 219-5.
With a good but not impossible target to defend Woodhay were simply magnificent with the ball and in the field. The opening pair of Simon Rutt (6-2-17-2) and Gavin Ansell (9-0-28-3) bowled tight lines and the fielding was sharp. The catching in particular was magnificent, wicket keeper Dom Walters held a superb chance off Rutt to dismiss the Holybourne captain and with 2 similar efforts from Batchelor in the gully Holyboune were soon in trouble.
With the opening pair rested it was time for the youngsters to take centre stage again. Rory Mitchell bowled with pace and movement in his spell of 5-0-34-1 and Sam Eadie took his first senior league wicket courtesy of a catch by Alex Jordan and finished with figures of 4-0-13-1. Eadie was also on hand to run out Minette after a quick bit of work at mid wicket. In the end Holybourne were dismissed for 109 giving Woodhay a second win in 3 games and showing that the future of the club is extremely bright.
