Match report YOUNGSTERS SHINE AS SECONDS OPEN WITH A WIN

Newly promoted East Woodhay II opened their new season in Hampshire Regional North Div 1 in fine style with a 7 wicket win over Rotherwick. On what it is usually a difficult batting wicket East Woodhay had no hesitation in asking Rotherwick to bat upon winning the toss.

The Woodhay opening bowlers faced stubborn resistance, and though conceding few runs they were unable to break the opening partnership until they had reached 52, skipper Mark Chapman getting rid of Wheeler for a stubborn 19 with a superb catch in the gulley from Daren Both. 13 year old left armer Alex Kerr making his debut then bowled a fine spell of 4 overs 1-13, helping to restrict Rotherwick to only 155-7 in their 42 overs.

With only a modest total to chase the Woodhay openers of Adrian Batchelor and 14 year old Alex Jordan made a careful start putting on 78 before Batchelor holed out. Jordan however batted with skill and maturity beyond his years hitting the winning boundary with three overs to spare and at the same time bringing up his maiden senior century. An imperious knock of 100 not out giving notice of all who watched of his tremendous potential.
