East Woodhay Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Compton & C Ford 3rd XI on Sat 18 Jun 2016 at 14:00
East Woodhay Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets
Match report
The second team snatched victory from the jaws of defeat from a game they dominated for 50 overs before suffering a terrible case of jitters to allow Compton back into the game. Winning the toss and batting first Compton soon found themselves in deep trouble as openers Rutt and Batchelor hit immaculate lengths and some sharp catching in the slip cordon did the rest. At 28 - 5 off 21 it should have been game over for Compton. However stubborn resistance from the Compton tail including a well made 67 by Dearlove helped them limp to 134 -7. It should never have been enough on an excellent Woodhay batting wicket where over 200 is the par score.
At 12-0 off the first 2 overs there was no sign of the trouble ahead. However the loss of Rutt well caught at slip for 17 followed by the run out of Jordan(12) and then Chakravarty being bolwed first ball reduced Woodhay to 49-4. That bought Batchelor to the crease and along with opener Chapman they set about shoring up the innings. After taking time to find their feed against some accurate bowling they start to accelerate again scoring at 5 an over and putting the game once more out of sight for Compton. However after a partnership of 32 Chapman misjudged an away swinger to edge to slip and the wobbles returned. Geoff Neale was bowled for a duck and when Batchelor departed for 15 Wodhay had lurched to 97 -7. That turned to 102 -8 when Andy Shipp was also bowled and suddenly Woddhay were in a run chase with only 2 wickets left. Step forward Ben Swingler and George Walters - aged 13 who not only steadied the ship but made the necessary acceleration to see Woodhay home to their second victory of the season with 5 balls to spare.
