Match report
Seconds Left Wondering
The Woodhay seconds were left wondering quite how they managed to loose to an Oakley side in a see saw match at Oakley. After being put into bat the new opening partnership of Alex Jordan and Adrian Batchelor put on 20 in the first 5 overs with no alarms. The Oakley bowlers the found their rhythm and a period of consolidation followed with Simon Rutt and Batchelor laying down the foundations. This continued after Rutt was caught behind for 18 with Charkravarty and Batchelor. At 98 for 2 off 28 the rate was slow but the foundations set. The batsman then went through the gears Batchelor scoring 69 and Chakravarty 53. Skipper Mark Chapman scored a quick fire 27 not out in only 5 overs making excellent use of the small boundaries to leave Woodahay with a respectable but not imposing 202.
The Oakley innings resembled the Woodhay approach. With Simon Rutt in his usual miserly form and well supported by George Walters Oakley had only managed 61-3 off 22 overs. However it was then the wheels came off. With opening bowler Compton sent in to have a swing he rode his luck surviving drops, a stumpings and several other near misses to give the innings a real acceleration. By the time he and skipper Lethaby had been dismissed for 43 and 46 respectively the asking rate was down to under 5 runs an over needed. There was though still hope as the Oakley batting line up was not the strongest. Queue Bennet who despite playing only his 3rd game of cricket ever managed a swashbuckling 28 including 3 sixes to get Oakley almost over the line. Oakley eventually running out winners by 4 wickets with 10 balls to spare. Special mention to Simon Rutt 9 overs 1 for 9 and George Walters 8-0-35-1 his first ever senior league wicket (smartly caught at slip by his dad Dom)
