East Woodhay Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Liss 1st XI on Sat 06 Aug 2016 at 13:30
East Woodhay Cricket Club Won by 10 wickets

Match report EWCC 1st XI recovered from a disappointing loss last week, to stamp their authority over the league they're favourites to win this year, with an emphatic 10 wicket victory over 5th place Liss 1st XI.

As they have done in all but the 1st game of the season, EWCC bowled first. Regular opening pair of Richard Dando (3-41) and Gavin Ansell (2-39) were put to the sword for the first 5 overs, Liss racing to 37-0, on what everyone knows to be the finest play surface anywhere in Hampshire or Berkshire. The smiles soon disappeared from the Liss players faces, as Dando and Ansell bagged 2 wickets each to dismiss the top 4 opposing batsmen. The pace of Cameron Flack (2-23), bowling first change, was too much for the middle and bottom order of Liss, who could rarely do more than play defensive shots, on occasions, ball making contact with the bat, rather than the flesh of the batsmen... A fantastic run out from Richard Dando (well gathered at the stumps by U15 Jamie Maughan), fielding at midwicket, saw off the impressive Liss number 5 batsman and with that, the long Liss tail was exposed. A combination of Mark Chapman (2-18) and the returning Dando ran through the tail to bowl out their opposition with 26 balls to spare, with the total on 172 all out.

In reply, the historically familiar site of Joe Lawrance and Nick bird strode out to open the batting, with this seasons stars with the bat, Richard Dando and Tom Flack waiting for their chance at numbers 3 & 4 respectively. They needn't have bothered strapping on their pads though, as both Bird (79*) and Lawrance (77*) batted with superb control against pace, swing and (very) slow bowling, to score 174 without loss, achieving victory with 97 balls remaining, to give the North Hampshire men maximum points to extend their lead at the top of the HCL County Division 3 North table.

A nigh on perfect performance from EWCC that means they only need 38 points, from a maximum 48, from their next 2 games, to ensure the league title is theirs! And with those games being against 16th (Liphook) and 15th (Overton) places, EWCC have a very good chance of playing in HCL County Division 2 next season, joining local rivals Hungerford.
