Compton & C Ford 2nd XI v East Woodhay Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 16 Jul 2016 at 14:00
East Woodhay Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets
Match report
Having suffered a first defeat of the season the previous week, a win for East Woodhay was vital to keep the promotion effort on target. With challenging conditions including a slow outfield and energy sapping humidity, this was always going to be a tough one. The home skipper decided to bat first having won the toss.
Regular opening pair Richard Dando (3-24) and Gavin Ansell (1-24) bowled with discipline up front. The initial break through came in the 12th over, skipper Joe Lawrance taking a low diving catch to his left, matched by an able performance in the field from U13 debutant, George Walters. From this point wickets fell at regular intervals, and the run rate rarely reached 2 RPO. Cameron Flack (2-19) bowled with express pace in tandem with Alan Williams (who was unlucky to go wicketless) in the middle overs. U16 star, Jamie Maughan (3-13) was able to swing the old ball and took 3 cheap wickets just as the home team were looking to up the rate. Compton were bowled out for 114 with 1 ball remaining in their innings.
Although aiming for a small target, the Woodhay batsmen knew the chase would require 100% concentration. An early wicket buoyed the home team as Lawrance was bowled by the in-swing of Russ Dearlove. Lawrance’s opening partner Nick Bird and number 3 Dando went about slowly making progress, boundaries at a premium with the slowness of the outfield. However, 53-1 quickly became 55-3 as youngster Joe Murray was rewarded for an excellent spell of bowling. He first removed Bird, then Toby Albert in successive overs. With the home team smelling blood, it was up to Dando (57*) and the experienced Will Flack (21*) to steady the ship. The pair accumulated precious runs, avoiding unnecessary risks. The target was reached in the 30th over with out any further losses.
