East Woodhay Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Hook & N Basics 3rd XI on Sat 14 May 2016 at 14:00
East Woodhay Cricket Club Won by 9 wickets
Match report
East Woodhay CC 1st XI continued their strong start to the season with a convincing victory over Hook and Newnham Basics 3rd XI, set at the beautiful Malverleys ground, with blue skies over head and on a pitch made for batting!
East Woodhay captain, Joe Lawrance, won the toss and chose to bowl first, hoping that any moisture remaining from midweek rains, might give his bowlers the best chance of making early breakthroughs. The opening partnership of Richard Dando (4-28) and Gavin Ansell (3-27) at first restricted and then proceeded to tear through Hook’s top and middle order; movement through the air and off the pitch proving too much for the youthful batting line-up . At 58-6, the experienced Coun Lye (50) and Hook skipper Keith Lovelock (36) went about rebuilding the innings with a partnership of 83, accumulated with little risk. However the home teams 1st change bowlers kept their lines tight and the run rate around 3 runs per over. Tom Flack (3-36), last week’s hero with the bat, broke the partnership and with some impressive catching, the work of the EWCC bowlers was completed with the final wicket falling in the 42nd over, Hook having scored a well below par 153.
Tom Flack and Joe Lawrance opened the EWCC batting innings with due care and attention, seeing off the new ball, accumulating 44 runs from the first 17 overs, Hook’s 15 year old Rupert Armstrong particularly impressive! Flack (20) was bowled by Lovelock bringing the flamboyant Richard Dando to the crease, who immediately looked to improve the scoring rate and punish the Hook change bowlers. An unbeaten 110 run partnership ensued with Lawrance (58*) continuing his risk free approach and Dando (73*) flaying the ball to the boundary with frequent brutality. EWCC reached their target with 8 overs to spare and in the process, denied the opposition any bowling bonus points, the final total being 154-1.
