East Woodhay Cricket Club Under 13's v Cookham Dean CC on Fri 05 Jul 2019 at 6:15pm
East Woodhay Cricket Club Won by 8 wkts

Match report The U13's turned in a near faultless performance to record a terrific win against a very strong Cookham Dean side to clinch the T20 Vitality Berkshire U13 Cup and progress into the national rounds of the competition. On winning the toss the Cookham Dean skipper had no hesitating in opting to bat - no surprise really for a team who whose top four all feature in the Berkshire County set up and who have hardly lost a match since they were U9 County champions in 2015. However our bowlers and fielders reacted superbly to the challenge laid down. From ball one which saw a Freddie Moore bouncer whistle past the openers nose we played with aggression, skill and unwavering commitment to the cause. Freddie (3-0-12-2) soon made a breakthrough bowling Stewart for 7 and then following up with the wicket of Lowson who unluckily got a bottom edge back onto his stumps to reduce Cookham to 22-2. Cookham never managed to break our strangle hold and with accurate spells from Thomas Hughes (3-0-11-0) and Sam Wills (3-0-10-1) even though the score progressed to 44 overs were ticking by and a run rate of 4 per over was not going to be enough. With runs at a premium Cookham sensed the chance to attack, picking out Joseph Sheridan as the bowler to go after hitting him for a big six over mid wicket. Agar tried to repeat the dose in the next over only to find the safe hands of Rory Downie who plucked a very fast moving ball out of the air at mid wicket to make the break through. One over later the double act struck again this time removing danger man Isbell and at 50-5 Woodhay were firmly on top. Joseph struck again in his 3rd over this time courtesy of an Archie Williams catch. At 56-6 there was still a chance of Cookham posting a defend able lead but Woodhay were not to take their foot of the gas. The skipper turned to spin bowling himself in tandem with Barney and whilst Seb kept things tight at one end (3-0-5-0) Barney ran through the lower ending taking 4 wickets for 14 runs in 3 overs to leave us chasing a modest target of 79 to win.

The interval team talk was very much the same theme as pre match. Believe in yourselves and impose our game on them. A watchful start saw Charlie and Seb put on 8 runs in the first 3 overs against some tight bowling. With a low total run rate was never going to be a issue it was just about not loosing wickets and building the score. Charlie was bowled in the 4th over to give Cookham brief hope but that was soon extinguished by a fine partnership between Thomas Hughes and Sebastian who after a slow start picked up the momentum to ensure the result was never in doubt. Seb retired on 31 to bring in Barney (15 not out). He did more of the same and despite us loosing Thomas for a well made 21 when needing only 7 more runs there were no further alarms and no need for Rory to repeat his heroics of the semi final.

A very fine performance from a highly talented group.
