Purley CC v East Woodhay Cricket Club Under 11's on Mon 02 Jul 2018 at 18:00
East Woodhay Cricket Club Won by 9 wickets

Match report On a blazingly hot Monday and with both the U9's and U13's also in action parental logistics were stretched to the max to get the boys to Purley for a 6pm start. Fortunately it must have all been left to the wives to organise as all 11 players arrived on time and with coach Mark showing a good encyclopaedic knowledge of local chippies he too arrived fed and ready for action.

Charlie lost the toss and Purley who we had beaten in our opening fixture of the season opted to bat. The boys we challenged to try and keep the score under 100 which with an outfield that would not have looked out of place in Abu Dhabi was not an easy ask. Thomas Hughes opened the bowling and but his radar must have been effected by the heat as he struggled to find his usually immaculate line. No such difficulty from Hugo Holmes at the other end as he took 2 wickets with his opening 2 balls to peg Purley back. Halson played well and showed the way to bat on such a quick outfield and he punished anything loose before retiring for a well made 27. Despite the heat our ground fielding held up with some good stops from Thomas Bennett and acrobatic takes from wicket keeper Bertie Donald making sure that the Purley run rate never got much above 5 per over. A particularly good piece of fielding from Thomas Hughes brought the 3rd wicket by way of a run out as the batsman attempted to take 2 to third man. An arrow like throw from distance to Bertie who whipped off the bails left the batsman well short of his ground just as he was threatening to get on top. Wickets then tumbled with skipper Weston taking a brace before Hugo reappeared to get another finished in with 3 wickets for 8 runs off 3 overs. Final score 95-6 off 20 overs.

At the half time break we set a target of trying to score at between 7 and 8 an over trying to make use of the fast outfield. The opening pair of Rory Saich and Oscar Fox began positively Rory hitting the spinner down the ground for a good boundary before finding himself short of his ground after being sent back trying to pinch a quick single. Jack and Oscar kept up the momentum Oscar retiring for a well made 25. Jack was joined by Charlie who brutally dispatched anything loose bringing up his retirement for 28 with a big six over the pavilion. A wide finished the game with Jack 15 not out. A comprehensive win with 10 overs left for the loss of only one wicket.

Thanks to Simon and Nick for their assistance with the scoring (though we will have to work on Nicks recognition skills so that he knows when his own son is bowling!)
