Match report On an evening unfortunately not as warm as it has been recently the U13s ventured away from home for our first game of the season. As usual this was in the Berkshire cup and we visited Theale & Tilehurst CC. Daniel was captain for the evening and lost the toss resulting in EWCC being invited to bat. Given the long discussions in the car journey trying to work out if we were stronger with bat or ball we decided it was a good toss to lose as we thought we were strong in both.
Isaac and Sebastian opened the innings with Isaac unluckily out to his second ball with cover palming the ball into the air straight to extra cover. Sebastian was next to go with the score on 24 and there were then excellent stands between Archie, Barney and Daniel. Barney eventually retired for a well struck 33 whist Archie and Daniel both scored 19. James and Harry continued the fine striking of the cricket ball to take our score to a respectable 128. Given quite a long outfield the fact that we hit seventeen 4s and 6s shows the value of the winter nets and hitting straight through the line of the ball.
We took to the field in confident mood. All boys bowled extremely well for early season and with the bowlers showing the benefit of bowling straight, runs were difficult to find and wickets fell regularly. Two each to Joseph and Daniel and one to Finlay and James. Worthy of note were Jack’s two overs where he did not concede a run of the bat and bowled just one wide. With EWCC heading for a well-deserved victory it was left to Isaac to finish the innings and he produced an eventful over conceding two runs off the bat, bowling two wides and taking two wickets. An entertaining finish to the game. A special mention here to Alex who kept for his first game in the U13s and only conceded 3 byes. A significant contribution in making it difficult for the opposition to score easy runs.
All players were a credit to the club and the T&TCC coach spoke to me after the game to tell me as much and how much of a surprise it was to be called ‘sir’. Well done to all of you in making sure the spirit of the game lives on. Our thanks also to Abi for keeping an excellent book in her first game scoring.
