Thatcham v East Woodhay Cricket Club Under 13's on Mon 15 May 2017 at 6:00pm
East Woodhay Cricket Club Lost by 5 runs

Match report The U13 gathered in the damp and gloom of Thatcham to play their first league game of the season and with Thatcham winning the toss they elected to bat first. Barney and Alex opened the attack and got some early movement off the seam which gave the Thatcham opening pair a few worrying moments, but both batted sensibly to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Wickets to Alex and Brendan kept Woody in the game and after the retirement of the Thatcham opener for a dominant 31, excellent bowling from Archie Donald and Daniel kept the pressure on Thatcham. These two bowlers only went for 21 runs from their 6 overs, an impressive return. Archie Darke and Ned continued the attack with Ned bowling particularly well given the wet conditions. An excellent performance in the field, although further work is still required in catching a cricket ball, kept Thatcham to 118 for 2.
With house lights already beaming from the local estate the mid innings break for squash and biscuits was forgotten as the teams swapped straight round. This was a little disturbing to the coach as a fine selection of home baked cakes had been provided rather than the usual Garibaldi. Anyway, Isaac was joined by Ned to commence the Woody innings and although the latter fell cheaply Isaac made the bowler pay for dismissing his partner by pulling him elegantly over mid-wicket for six. Following Isaac’s departure, the new pair of Archie Donald and Alex started to accrue regular runs. Their batting was patient, showing the full face of the bat to the straight balls and punishing those that offered width. Both retired for 30 within a few balls of each other. This resulted in two new batsmen, Daniel and Archie Darke, to be at the crease at the same time, and with darkness descending, it made batting a little harder. Both were very positive with only victory in their thoughts. They attacked the bowling when possible and ran well, most of the time, to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Entering the final over Woody still needed 9 to win. With the offside fielders mainly on the boundary it was going to be difficult, and after some further singles a six off the final ball was beyond us. Our final score was 113 for 2. As a team we again performed well and although opportunities were limited, Harry, Seb and Henry performed with great commitment to the team.
