East Woodhay Cricket Club Won by 5 runs

Match report YOUNGSTERS HOLD THEIR NERVE
The U11’s maintained their unbeaten record in a nervous finish watched on by ex England cricketer Jamie Dalrymple. Put into bat the team talk involved being more positive with trying to score runs and in particular making and effort to take more singles and turn ones into two’s outing pressure on the fielders. The opening pair of Sebastian and Hugo batted well against some useful opening bowlers advancing to 33 of 6 overs regularly rotating the strike and punishing the occasional bad ball. Sadly Hugo was then the victim of some good fielding when Sebastian tried to pinch a single at point and he was run out for an excellent 15. Not long after Sebastian was also out, bowled as he tried to up the scoring rate. Bertie Darke and Oscar Fox also perished – both run out as we tried to take quick singles without doing the basics of backing up from the non strikers end or grounding our bats (lessons we will rehearse on Friday!) In amongst all the chaos Charlie Weston showed a cool head keeping the score board ticking over and making sure we batted the full 20 overs. There were some short cameos from Toby Saich and Willoughby but it was Charlies unbeaten 25 that made sure we posted a reasonable total of 118.
For the first 10 overs it went pretty much according to plan With the exception of a dropped catch off Hugo second ball of the innings the outfield was tidy and the bowling disciplined. At the half way mark Sonning had posted 35 -2 off 10 overs leaving them a big task in the second half of the game if they were to better our total. Sonning upped the pace, they pushed their luck with quick singles, two run outs being very close to call and the benefit of the doubt having to be given to the batsman. With a few boundaries all of a sudden the momentum shifted but still they needed an unlikely 28 off the last 2 overs. They managed 12 off over 19 leaving 18 to win surely they couldn’t could they? First ball 2, 16 to win off 5. Next ball 4, 12 to win off 4. Then a wide 11 to win off 4. Another 4 7 to win off 3. The Woodhay crowd were tense, the food was being served in the pavilion ahead of the President’s game but Jamie Dalrymple was not to be moved – he wanted to watch the end of the game! Ball 4, it’s a short ball the batsman goes back and its heading for the boundary in the air, in comes Charlie Weston and pulls off a tremendous catch and Woodhay scrape home by 5 runs!
