Match report
U11’s HOLD THEIR NERVE
The U11’s held their nerve in a topsy turvy top of the table clash with Peppard to preserve the only unbeaten record in the division. On a sweltering morning we found ourselves under pressure early on. Some naggingly straight bowling and a failure to work the singles prevented us from getting the fluent start we are used to. Eventually Sebastian started to find his range and the boundary and after 8 overs we had reached 38 without loss. Rather than kicking on we went backwards. Sebastian played around a short delivery that didn’t get up to be bowled for 20 and Charlie was out LBW for 4 shortly afterwards. Still we found it hard to put bat on ball and with a reluctance to really push for singles meant that at time only wides and no balls kept the score moving. Archie was eventually run out in the 11th over for only 4 and Sam Wills was caught for the same score trying to hit the ball over the top and accelerate the scoring. Toby Saich and James Hall ensured we got up to a final score of 98, but with only 52 off those coming off the bat it was a disappointing effort. If we are to develop then the running between the wickets and intent to put bat to ball has got to be improved.
At the half time team talk we said that 98 would simply have to be enough, and with a talented bowling attack we did have a chance. Our opening bowlers kept it tight and we didn’t do much wrong in the field, but Peppard batted sensibly and with skill and the opening partnership reached 37 before Sam Wills took a fine caught and bowled to dismiss Nick or 23. As the sun beat down we took a well earned drinks break after 10 overs and with Peppard being 53 -1 they were definitely favourites. And then as is often the way in cricket the game changed in a single moment. Charlie Weston came into the attack and the tall Peppard left hander took him on sending the ball crashing away towards the leg side boundary. However he had reckoned without Hugo Holmes. Stationed at deep backward square by the skipper for exactly that reason he made ground around the boundary before taking a fantastic catch low down. He was mobbed by the rest of the team and they never looked back. Two balls later Charlie was in the wickets again this time courtesy of a Sebastian catch and mid on. As our confidence grew all of a sudden Peppard panicked. We took 3 sharp run outs in 2 overs thanks to superb fielding and throwing from Joseph Sheridan who showed a cool head in picking the right end to throw and cool hands by Alex and Willoughby in whipping the bails off. Sebastian also got in on the run out act with another piece of sharp work at mid off with a nice direct hit.
The bowlers too were on fire giving absolutely nothing to hit and the wickets continued to tumble. It was finally finished by Hugo who started it all off as he returned to the attack to bowl 2 batsman in 3 balls and give Woodhay and incredible 24 run victory. The boys performed magnificently, they only bowled 3 wides / no balls and Alex B was faultless behind the stumps. Credit must also go to Peppard for a cracking game of cricket played with great skill on both sides and in a spirit on which our cherished game is based and one we must continue to preserve for the next generation.
