East Woodhay Cricket Club Under 11's v Reading on Thu 15 Jun 2017 at 6pm
East Woodhay Cricket Club Won by 6 wkts

Match report The U11’s finally managed to play Reading at the third time of asking due to some dodgy early season weather and boy was it worth the wait. Reading came into the game as one of 3 unbeaten sides in the league (the other two being us and Sunday’s opponents Peppard). Sebastian won the toss for the first time and decided to field first. The Reading openers showed their quality and with Arche Thomas bowling fast and straight and Bertie Darke getting some good away swing it was an even contest in the first few overs. Woodhay got their first bot of luck at the end of the 4th over when the Reading opener chased a very wide one from Bertie and in his exuberance managed to hit his own wicket. That bought the Reading skipper to the crease who was about as tall as I am and immediately showed his power with some big hitting. He didn’t only have power though – he was a class act and score runs around the wicket. Our bowlers though held their own and never let the rate get above six and over with some good fielding positioning from Sebastian and really good basics and concentration from all the fielders – led by Jake Dallyn behind the stumps who looked very comfortable on his first outing. The Reading skipper duly retired and while the boundaries dried up Reading pushed singles everywhere and kept up the aggressive momentum. Our middle order bowlers really hit their rhythm, Joseph and Alex taking wickets in consecutive overs backed up by Jack Robbins who bowled a fine spell of 2-7-2 despite having a bruised hand after some heroic fielding. The other Reading opener eventually retired in the 16th over and with the Reading tail collapsing he was soon back in again with the big hitting skipper as Reading looked to build and imposing total. He did manage to clear the ropes with a big six but the next over he was trapped LBW and with the final opener run out Reading finished with strong but not ungettable total of 118 all out off 19 overs.
So the target was a run a ball – simple? Not against this Reading attack. Their bowlers were quick and accurate and scoring was not easy. This time it was time for our batsman’s class to show through. Archie worked the singles where he could and Sebastian made most use of an excellent batting track using the pace of the bowlers against them as he peppered the off side boundary finding the gaps between the fielders. When he retired after 8 overs the score was bang on target at 48-0. Sadly Toby Saich was run out without facing a ball bringing Bertie Darke to the crease. Cometh the hour cometh the man! With great skill and concentration he built up an ultimately match winning partnership with Archie. Growing in confidence as the innings progressed he rans singles well and with the odd boundary thrown in for good measure they were able to keep up with the rate. When Bertie was finally out for 23 and Archie having to retire there was still some work to do to secure the victory – especially with the opening bowlers coming back into the attack. Thomas Bailey and Bertie Donald played very unselfishly and for the team perishing as they tried to keep the momentum up – leaving it to Spencer and Joseph to hit the winning runs with 6 balls to spare.
A great finish to a high quality game played in an excellent spirit where once again every player contributed and was a real and genuine credit to the club. Thanks to Nick for scoring and Simon for the drinks and biscuits. Next stop Peppard…….
