East Woodhay Cricket Club Won by 84 runs

Match report EAST WOODHAY U11 v THATCHAM U11 – Tue 16 May 2017
The U11’s picked up where they left off against Pangbourne with another fine win, this time at home to Thatcham. With persistent drizzle and a greasy outfield Thatcham put Woodhay into bat. Openers Archie Thomas and Sebastian Chapman began watchfully taking only a few singles off a tidy first over before exploding into action. Anything remotely short was pulled to the leg side boundary and when the bowlers pitched it up they were driven through the covers. With the field soon spread far and wide they took the opportunity to take singles and will and keep Thatcham guessing. Putting on 45 in the first five overs before Sebastian retired (27) the pattern of the innings was set. James Hall replaced Sebastian and there was more of the same, watchful defence if it was straight and powerful strikes at anything loose. Archie was next to retire for a fine 27 and was replaced by Charlie Weston. Different batsman same result. The score progressed to 143 – 0 off 17 overs with James retiring unbeaten on 26 and Charlie making 25 not out. Toby Saich was unlucky to get run out for 3 unselfishly trying to up the run rate and Willoughby perished trying to hit over the top. Tom Bailey finished with 3 not out; 152 the target to beat.
The half time break was a quick one as dark skies threatened to bring a premature end to proceedings. The boys took to the field with the aim of bowling straight and covering each other in the field. They were magnificent. Hugo Holmes opened the bowling with Archie Thomas, each of them getting a wicket in their 2 overs, courtesy of some excellent catching by debut wicket keeper Alex Braidwood and Archie at mid off. Thatcham were reeling and were never given a chance to recover. I was so impressed with the ways the boys stuck at it in the field and concentrated when they were bowling. They all put in a superb performance with wickets for Saich, Hall, Bailey (2 overs 1 wicket for 0 runs!) and Weston (despite some barracking from his father) and a total of 3 catches for Alex Braidwood behind the stumps. A great day at the office!
