East Woodhay Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report U11’s SHINE ON FIRST OUTING
On a glorious sunny evening at Whithchurch on Thames it wasn’t only the sun that was shining as the U11’s kicked off their league season in fine style with a fine 5 wkt victory.
After winning the toss and opting to field the opening bowling pair of Archie Thomas and Joseph Sheridan set the tone. Bowling fast and straight Archie made the breakthrough in the 3rd over clean bowling the opening Pangbourne batter. With the very next ball Pangbourne were rocking as Archie produced a beauty of a delivery jagging back to hit the top of off stump and get rid of dangerman Freddie Blacker. Toby Saich then chipped in with a wicket having the other opening well caught at backward point by Sebastian Chapman.
The Woodhay bowlers continued to keep it tight and with some really excellent stops in the field from the likes of Samuel White, the Pangbourne innings struggled for momentum. Willoughby Jordan bowled with great control in his 2 overs 1-7 spinning the ball both ways and thoroughly confusing the batsman. Eventually Pangbourne got going with Cook hitting successive boundaries on his way to a rapid fire 22 before he was bowled by Sebastian Chapman, who like Archie Thomas took wickets in successive balls. The score closed on 85.
Openers Archie Thomas and Sebastian mixed caution and attacking stroke play to excellent effect, putting on 39 in the first 5 overs and providing a great platform for the innings. Archie was unlucky to be bowled off his pads for a well crafted 19. Charlie Weston maintained the momentum with some lusty blows and at 60-2 off 8 overs the game was effectively won.
Pangbourne kept battling though and chipped away removing Weston and Toby Saich. Joseph Sheridan steadied the ship with Sebastian and the pair took Woodhay to within 3 runs of victory before Sebastian was bowled by one that kept horribly low. Willoughby tried to win the game with one shot but perished in the process before James Hall strode to the wicket. He took a look at the first ball before dispatching the second ball over point for 4 to seal a 5 wicket victory with 5 overs to spare.
With several of the boys making their debut in hardball cricket I was extremely proud of their performance. Every member of the team contributed to a great team effort – a fabulous start to the season.
