Woodhay Win Bowness Trophy 2019

12 Aug 2019

East Woodhay won their 1st Sunday Bowness Trophy at Falkland CC on Sunday 11 August.

We played Newbury CC in the semi-final scoring 203-7 off our 20 overs, top scorers Joe Lawrance 51 and Ollie Batchelor 42, Newbury were bowled out for 118 with James Bird 4-10 and Alan Williams 3-37 the pick of the bowlers.

In the other semi final the hosts Falkland narrowly defeated Thatcham.

Skipper Joe Lawrance won the toss and elected to bat, the Woodhay innings started badly as we lost both Tom Flack (0) and James Bird (2) LBW with the score on 5, this brought together teenagers George Walters and Ollie Batchelor who batted and ran superbly to take the innings forward before Walters was bowled for 42, Batchelor was the out LBW for 25. The Woodhay batsmen pushed forward and took the score to 146-8 with contributions from Joe Lawrance, Jeremy Richards, Neil Prince, Cameron Flack, Duncan Johnson and Alan Williams.

The Falkland response never really got going in the face of accurate bowling and aggressive fielding from the Woodhay side, with wickets being spread amongst the Woodhay bowlers and went from 28-3 off 5 overs to 58-5 off 11 and subsided to 77 all out.

A victory that bodes well for the future of Woodhay cricket as we had 4 players aged under 20 in the side with 3 of the boys coming fully through our junior section!

Thanks to Ian Gardner and Nick Bird for umpiring during the day and to Falkland CC for hosting the event.
