Match report East Woodhay CC 1st XI got their 2016 HCL County Division 3 North campaign underway with a solid victory at the impressive home of South Wilts 3rd XI in Salisbury. On a belter of a pitch, with a cloudless sky overhead and temperatures in the mid-20’s, everyone was surprised when South Wilts won the toss and elected to field first! Openers Joe Lawrance (57) and Tom Flack were faultless in their work, frequently rotating the strike and pouncing on anything slightly loose, to form an opening stand of 107, before the skipper, Lawrance, fell LBW. Well supported by Richard Dando (42) and Will Flack (24*), the innings belonged to Flack, who carried his bat for a superb 149*, an innings of perfect tempo, accelerating through the gears as the innings approached it’s end. Flack walked from the field, followed by his father Will, to the applause of all those watching, the total having reached 281 for the loss of only 2 wickets, from the allocated 45 overs.

In reply, the home team started slowly against the miserly Richard Dando and Alan Williams, finding themselves well behind the required rate, at 50-2 after 13 overs. Then came the impressive partnership from South Wilts’ numbers 4 (S. Kidd) and 5 (J. Burton), which dragged them back into the game, moving the score to 147-3 after 27 overs. Still needing to score at 7.5rpo, continued acceleration was needed for South Wilts, a fact not lost to Gavin Ansell (3-50), who with changes of pace, made the key breakthrough that turned the tide back in favour of the men from North Hampshire; man of the moment T. Flack taking a sharp catch at mid-wicket. From that point, the focus turned from defence to attack for East Woodhay, wanting to claim maximum points for not only winning, but taking all 10 of the opposition wickets. Sadly the final bowling point eluded EWCC, dropped catches meaning the final bowling point went begging, South Wilts finishing their 45 overs on 236-9.
